l am 5'2 and have a few pair of jeans that are way too long. They were given to me. l would like to be able to wear them without them dragging the floor, but l do not own a sewing machine. Any tips?

You can certainly put a regular hem in jeans by hand. Reproducing the ''factory'' stitching by hand can also be done (I'd suggest a double running stitch), but it is pretty tough on the hands.

If the jeans r basically nearly straight at the cuff, u can also take a tuck to the inside of the jeans just above the old hemline. Turn the tuck upwards inside & stitch it down to the side & inseam, & perhaps a couple of tacking
stitches along the upper fold. That is called a ''Eurohem'' among my friends who r alterationists, & people r willing to pay extra for it.

Alternatively, on flared jeans, the old hem can be cut off, the jeans leg tapered to the original diameter, & the jeans hem reattached with a seam to the inside. I'd suggest backstitch for the basic structural stitch, & then whipping or blanketstitching raw edges to prevent fraying.

Do yourself a favor and just take them to a tailor. Most will charge between $10-20 to hem the jeans, but they will make it look like they were made the right length for you, instead of trying to do it yourself and have it turn out very uneven, or worse yet, you loose the bottom hem of the jeans and they look pretty stupid. I've tried doing it myself and taken them to a tailor, and trust me, the tailor is worth the $$.

I know how u feel im 4'11 & have the same problem but an easier way to hem ur jeans is to first tack up ur jeans to the height u want them to be, then get a needle & some thread, & sew all around the part the needs to be hem & it helps if u use the same color as the material. Or if that takes too long u can go to a arts & craft store & buy double sided tape for clothing & just place it on the jeans or pants & fold the part that is too long up to the tape & when ur done all u have to do is just iron it so the tape will stick & last to the jean.

Decide how much u want the turn up to be, & using tailor is chalk, mark this distance around the leg using a ruler or tape measure on the inside of the leg. Fold up the hem to the mark, & tack stitch (very loose far apart stitches in a bright colour.) Put the trousers on inside out & check they're the correct length, then using the matching colour thread, sew small stitches around the original hem bottom onto the trouser leg. Make sure the stitches do not appear the proper side, by catch stitching (ie, making only very small stitching on the inside of the trouser leg & not through the whole fabric). This sounds confusing, but it is really very easy.

It is better to hem jeans by hand. They will look better. You do not need a sewing machine to hem jeans.

yes go to a fabric store. they have this stuff that u can fold the jean over then iron it, it works really well for me. It looks like tape & u place it on the jean then fold the jean on top of it & iron it flat. the heat melts the 'tape' & sets it in place. after a while u may have to replace it & this stuff is totally removeable so if u grow an inch or two or u mess up & make it too short u can take it out. ive used it for jeans shirts skirts costumes & so much more.

oh & p.s. i dont own an iron, i use a hair straightener! lol
